At What Age to Start Learning the Abacus?

If you've landed on this article, you're probably wondering what the best age is for your child to learn or buy an abacus.

As parents, we always want to do our best to give our children the best opportunities.

As abacus specialists, we're here to help answer your questions.

Our short answer is that there is no determined age, but it's better to introduce the abacus to your child as early as possible (around 3-4 years old).

Nevertheless, every child and situation is different.

Reading this, you might think you've missed the boat for your child. But that's not the case at all. Starting at an older age is still beneficial and can even be easier.

Without further ado, let's talk about it in more detail.

What are the prerequisites for learning the abacus?

Ideally, to benefit from the abacus, a child should at least be able to count to 10-20. Ideally up to 100.

However, before reaching this stage, the abacus can still be a helpful tool to aid in their learning by visualizing numbers.

The "Ideal" Age for Learning the Abacus

It is estimated that ages 4 to 7 are ideal for starting to learn a new concept, as this is when the brain's capacity to absorb new things is greatest.

A child's brain activity is higher during their growth years, as the greatest growth of the human brain occurs between ages 4 and 14.

This is the best time to increase the frequency of nerve connections in the brain. A child's memory capacity, concentration, and reasoning abilities can leap at this stage if given proper exposure.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of starting early (3 to 6 years)?

Advantages

Many studies have shown that the majority of human brain development occurs up to age 13. Brain development and growth accelerate most between ages 4 and 6, and progression slows after age 13.

Therefore, it is more beneficial for a child's brain development to start earlier. Furthermore, the earlier a child grasps the concepts of arithmetic calculations, the sooner they can apply these skills and excel academically, which helps strengthen their success and self-confidence.

Disadvantages

The child may take longer to understand the basic concepts of the abacus, such as addition/subtraction formulas. And if they haven't studied this at school yet, they won't be able to progress further to multiplication and division methods.

What are the advantages and disadvantages if my child starts learning the abacus late (7 to 14 years)?

Advantages

Older children have a stronger foundation in mathematics, allowing them to reach an advanced level in a shorter time.

They can go further, faster.

Disadvantages

Older children may not feel as motivated initially due to their solid math knowledge. If they continue using the method taught at school to solve addition/subtraction questions, it will take them longer to benefit from using the abacus for calculations.

Which abacus for which age?

Depending on the age you start your child learning the abacus, it may be relevant to offer them a different type of abacus.

For a child aged 3 to 6, the "classic" abacus is undoubtedly the best choice as it is the simplest to grasp due to its intuitively obvious operation.

After age 6, however, we advise you to introduce your child directly to the Japanese soroban (or the Chinese abacus).

Indeed, while it is a bit more difficult to grasp initially, it is ultimately a better tool for advancing further in learning.

Which Abacus to Choose

Why learn the abacus when we have calculators and computers?

While in the past, abacus training had practical utility, it remains popular because it offers other benefits that are still relevant today:

  • Improved math skills and increased interest in learning mathematics
  • Enhances the following mental abilities: concentration, observation, memory, analytical skills, visualization, imagination, spatial ability, attention span, and focus
  • Cultivates patience, self-confidence, and self-discipline
  • Promotes listening, multitasking, and problem-solving skills
  • Improves coordination between eyes, ears, and hands
  • Stimulates the development of both the left and right sides of the brain

Advantages of Using Abacuses for Learning Mathematics

  • Physically manifests the concept of decimals and the progression of units by tens.
  • Improves understanding of composite numbers (through the use of supplementary numbers for 5 and 10).
  • Uses a left-to-right calculation method, allowing for quick estimation and rounding.
  • The child works on the decimal system rather than the fractional system, giving a natural progression to more complex arithmetic concepts.
