How the Russian Abacus Works
The operation of the Russian abacus is very similar to that of the traditional European abacus. It features 9 beads per row and 10 rows.
It is used to teach math lessons in schools by helping children visualize math problems and learn mathematics using an abacus, enabling them to better understand mathematical concepts.
Using the Russian Abacus
The Russian abacus is still widely used in Russia and some neighboring countries, where it was propagated by the Soviet education system.
It is also used by math enthusiasts to practice calculation and mental arithmetic. Some math experts use it to easily solve complex mathematical problems, such as multiplying large numbers.
The Russian abacus consists of vertical rods representing place values and beads representing individual numbers.
Learning with the abacus offers many benefits:
- Math becomes easier to learn with an abacus.
- It enhances memory since the position of beads on the rods must be memorized.
- Develops the child’s mathematical skills.
- Boosts children’s mathematical awareness by using visual symbols to represent math concepts.
